In order to achieve these objectives, the CAC undertakes various activities in the areas of research, lobbying and advocacy as well as representation of consumers at various national and international for a, conferences and workshop.

About Us

 About the CAC
CAC was established in 2008 as a Consumer Organization with the aim of providing Advocacy, Research and provide support for consumers seeking redress. It became an Affiliate member of the Consumers International (CI) in the same year. Consequently CAC represents CI in Ghana.

Objectives and Activities of CAC
The principal objectives of the CAC are:

  • to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities;
  • to provide a channel for consumer opinion and representation;
  • to serve as watchdog for consumer interest and seek redress for consumer complaints;
  • to foster understanding among consumers, producers, supplies and government;
  • to disseminate information widely on consumer issues and on all matters of concern and interest to consumers;
  • to campaign actively for the enactment of law, enunciation of policies and establishment of institutions and mechanism for the protection and empowerment of consumers and consumer groups;
  • to advance the cause of consumer, promote consumerism and the development of critical awareness among Ghanaian consumers; and
  • to promote responsible and sustainable consumption among Ghanaian consumers.

Activities of CI
In order to achieve these objectives, the CAC undertakes various activities in the areas of research, lobbying and advocacy as well as representation of consumers at various national and international for a, conferences and workshop.
In line with this, the CAC has carried out research assignments on various consumer issues including quality of ready to eat foods in Major Urban Areas in Ghana, ethical marketing pharmaceuticals in Ghana, Marketing of Banned Baby Foods and Drugs as well as the availability of genetically manufactured (GM) foods on the Ghanaian market. Three representative of the CAC serve on various ISO Technical Committee, as well as members of various Technical Committee at the  Board of the Ghana Standard Authority for several years.

The Association also participates regularly in various public consultations organized by the public authorities, particularly the Ministry of Trade and Industry. CAC is also represented on the African Teleconference Dialogue on Consumer Protection organized monthly by the Federal Trade Commission of the US and also participated in the initial draft of Ghana Consumer Protection Policy, which is still being considered by the Ministry of Trade and Industry,
On account of its affiliations to CI, the CAC represented CI on the Codex Committee for Foods for Special Dietary Uses a number of times.
